LEARNING ASTRAL PROJECTION

Astral projection is a technique which may be used by magicians working in any magical practice but astral projection is not a magical practice in itself. It is certainly one of the most useful techniques available to magicians. Once magicians master true astral projection, there is no barrier of space which can prevent them from learning whatever they desire to know. Astral projection is not a means of divination; it does not describe the future. It is a technique that allows those who practice it to learn about the present.

Astral projection, called by some authors etheric projection, is a technique for using the astral form (or astral body) to explore both the astral and physical worlds. Magicians who are able to develop their talent to the highest degree can use astral projection to make changes in the physical world.

Astral projection usually occurs on a spontaneous basis in those who are passing through adolescence. The experience is usually so frightening to young people that the emotion of fear, which it manifests within them, is sufficient to close down the faculty indefinitely. However, if the first spontaneous experience of astral projection is successful and is encouraged, the ability may be developed and used later.

Astral projection is based upon the concept that human beings have a number of nonphysical bodies. The physical body, in this view, is understood to be the most dense and least subtle of the bodies. The astral body is the next body above the physical body. It is thought to be less dense and more subtle than the physical body. The mental body is more subtle than the astral body, while the spiritual body is the least dense and the most subtle of all of the bodies. The theory of astral projection is that people may separate the astral body and part of the mental consciousness from the gross physical body. It is believed that when this occurs people are still connected to their physical bodies, as only a part of the astral body separates from the physical body. Different schools have different details in their explanations of the many questions and details which surround this nonphysical process.

There are several organizations that attempt to teach astral projection to their students. These groups have a varying degree of success. Eckankar, one of these organizations, claims to be a spiritual group of great antiquity. They occasionally have success in developing the basic ability to project astrally in a few of their students. They have a great deal of written material available to members of their organization.

Like any other arcane art, astral projection is best taught on a one-to-one basis by a teacher who is proficient at the art. I mentioned earlier that not every person can learn to project the astral body. In most cases the art can be taught only on a very limited basis; for example, students may learn to project their astral bodies only in the space of their bedrooms.
